ELM REPORT – April 2024

With the huge snowfall of the past couple of days, it is a bit of a challenge to think about spring and what flowers are going to populate our flower beds and planters this summer! However, we have just received some flower suggestions from our landscaping company for the upcoming season which is very exciting! Worse drought conditions than in 2023 are predicted for the 2024 season, so we may be facing water restrictions like we did towards the end of the 2023 season. Despite those restrictions, our flower displays were beautiful, and we are looking at similar designs for this summer. As for your own garden, the city website has some suggestions regarding plant species that are more drought resistant:

ELM newsletter articles are published on the ECA website as soon as they are submitted to the communications coordinator, whereas the hard copy is delivered to residents several weeks later. If you are regularly checking our website, the information below may reach you on time to remind you to frequently check the city of Calgary website for updates on a few freebies. As in previous years, the city will give away free compost from the green bin material collected. Remember that you need to book appointments to get your free compost! At this time, there are no updates regarding start dates; however, below is a link to the page with information about the green-cart-compost-giveaway:

Also available to Calgarians is free mulch; keep an eye out for updates about free mulch by checking the webpage below. All of this free stuff goes quickly, so check the website daily with your morning coffee!

The annual Spring Market and Perennial Exchange will take place on April 27th from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Edgemont Community Centre! Hopefully, we will have an early spring, allowing you to dig up perennials you would like to exchange at this time. Please label your plants and bring them in a container or lined cardboard box for the new happy owners to take home. No invasive species or weeds please!

Our ELM coordinator would also be very happy to arrange for curbside pickup of any perennials that you would like to donate to the community. Please let us know if you are planning to donate plants this year by contacting us via email at: [email protected]

Lastly, street sweeping in Edgemont is scheduled for June 8-12th.

Any concerns or questions regarding ELM, please contact us using the above email address and we will be very happy to respond to your concerns.
