February President’s Message
With January in the rearview mirror, we’re looking forward to February. February always seems to me to be the “slump” month. We’re looking for something to do but not quite ready to be encouraged that spring is not far away. Although, if I know the gardeners in the community, they are already perusing the seed catalogues.
I started investigating what folks celebrate in February. Wow! February 2 should be a hubbub of activity: Ground Hog Day, Play Your Ukelele Day, Optimists’ Day, and the list goes on. Nowadays it seems like we have a day for everything. I particularly like Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17. That’s one I think we can all get behind.
On the ECA schedule, we are looking forward to Frost Fest on February 19. Fingers crossed that we get enough cold weather to have our outdoor skating rink in good condition. Thanks to Rick and the team of volunteers who look after that facility for us. Nevertheless, the hot chocolate and doughnuts will taste just a good if we have warmer than average weather and there will be new friends to meet. March 9 brings us to Lego Mania. 2024 is our second event and if last year was any indication of the interest in Lego, we are anticipating a large turnout. Each entry is $8 + $1 registration fee and there are numerous categories to capture any builder’s interest. You can find additional information at https://www.edgemont.ab.ca/events/lego-mania-competition-3/ .
The Program Committee is always adding new programs and events. Keep up to date by visiting the events calendar found on the ECA website.
We are already recruiting for the next ECA Board. This year we anticipate that we will lose some experienced Board members who have completed their allowed terms on the Board. This means there will be several directorships to fill. We have had some interest and look forward to others stepping up to this challenge. If you are interested, let me know or get in touch with Rick. We can fill in the details. In addition, if you’d like to see what we do, you would be welcome to attend a Board meeting to get a sense of what our committees and our Board have on the agenda. Send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll make the arrangements.
Our Annual General Meeting is where elections to the Board take place and the business of the previous year goes under review. Elected directors serve a two-year term. We can have up to fifteen directors. This year we have been running very lean with eight although this isn’t how we started out. We all understand that circumstances change and what we thought we could do last May and the challenges we were presented with meant we lost some good people. I believe we have made good progress on governance, human resources, building administration and renovations, and other matters that needed attention. We have a good staff complement to support the Board’s direction. With any luck, we can keep the momentum going. Mark Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 7 pm in the Panorama Room of the Edgemont Community Centre and plan to attend the AGM. You must be a member to vote or serve on the Board. Memberships are available online or onsite prior to the AGM being called to order.
That’s a wrap for February.
